QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR CHILD

DURING OR AFTER THEY FINISH A BOOK

(It is not necessary to ask all of the questions every time.  Choose one or two and make sure they respond accurately.)

 

  • Who do you think is the most important character in the book?  Why?

  • What problem(s) is your main character(s) having in the story?

  • Is there a hero (or antagonist/villain) in this book?  Who is it?

  • Was there a problem that had to be solved in the chapter/book?

  • What do you feel is the most important word, sentence, or passage in the book?

  • Do you think the title fits the book?  Why or why not?

  • What character would you like to be in the book?  Why?

  • Did this book make you laugh, cry, smile, or cheer?  Explain.

  • What vivid descriptions make this book so interesting?

  • What came as a surprise in the book?  Why?

  • Who do you recommend this book to?  Why?

  • On a scale from 10 (best) to 1 (worst), how do you rate this book?

  • Was reading this book easy, just right or challenging?  Why?

  • Who should/shouldn’t read this book and why?

  • What kind of feelings did the book create for you today?  Why?

  • What was the author saying about life and living, through this book?

  • How do you picture the author of this book?  Why do you see her/him this way?

  • Does the character remind you of yourself?  How?

  • What parts of the book seem most believable?  Why?  What parts seem unbelievable and why?

  • What would you and your favorite character talk about in your first conversation?  You begin the conversation.

  • Has the book helped you in any way?  Explain.

  • What would you do if you were the main character?

  • Do any of the characters remind you of friends, family, or classmates?

  • How are different characters alike and how are they different?  Compare and contrast.

  • Do you like the ending of the book?  Why or why not?  Do you think there is more to tell?

  • Do you think there should be a sequel (Part2) to this book?  Why?
