Dear
Parents, Grandparents, and Guardians,
My name is Gayle Smith, and I am one of the Resource Room teachers
at CCHS. Having worked with
special students for over 25 years, I am an advocate
of “smallness” and “personal attention” in a classroom setting.
My career in education was launched in New Jersey while I was working with profoundly
handicapped pre-school youngsters in a setting funded by United Way.
At the time, I
was attending Douglas College, and was so impacted by the
struggle and resolve of my little students, I made the decision to
dedicate my life to teaching these very special children.
Presently
I am in the process of setting up a Resource Room setting here at CCHS
for your student where he/she may come for instruction in organization
skills, as well as any necessary help with other curriculum assignments. The Block has been structured in such a way as to aid each
student to keep on track, whether they are working alone or with a group
on their varying assignments. You may ask, “What is the role of
the resource room?” The role of the special
education resource room teacher functions to provide instructional
support to students (prescriptive role) and to consult with their classroom teachers
(consultative role) on a regular basis.

There
a number of web sites designed to give families information concerning
their child's needs. I have come up with a couple sites for your
use, which I have found helpful.
