Sixth Grade

Sixth grade students should:

  • have mastered listening skills and the ability to participate in discussions in the library

  • read independently and answer questions about what they are reading correctly

  • be responsible for their books

  • be reading books and appreciating their value

  • understand most library terms 

  • be logging on to the student computers and taking Reading Counts tests

  • understand how to pick books on their reading level or pick Reading Counts books

  • find the author of their favorite books or books by their favorite author and be checking them out

  • be using the card catalog to find books on subjects that they are interested in

  • be using the reference section and looking for information 

  • know what a encyclopedia, atlas, thesaurus, biography, biographical dictionary, and other reference books are and be able to use them

  • have knowledge of the Dewey decimal system and be able to apply it when searching for books

  • be able to use the library independently and appropriately

  • be able to use the student computers appropriately for research needs
