Fifth Grade

Fifth grade students should be:

  • mastering listening skills and participation in discussions

  • reading independently and able to answer questions about what they are reading

  • responsible for their books

  • able to read a story and appreciate it's value

  • understand many library terms 

  • logging on to the student computers and taking Reading Counts tests

  • picking books on their reading level or picking Reading Counts books

  • finding the author of their favorite book or books by their favorite author 

  • using the card catalog to find books on subjects that they are interested in

  • using the reference section and looking for information with little assistance

  • know what a encyclopedia, atlas, thesaurus, biography, biographical dictionary, and other reference books are and be able to use them with assistance

  • have knowledge of the Dewey decimal system and be able to apply it when searching for books

  • using library independently and appropriately

  • able to use the student computers appropriately for research needs
