Welcome Letter

Dear Parents,

I am pleased to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you and welcome your child to my class.  This is my ninth year teaching.  I attended CU at Denver and obtained my bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and my master’s degree in Educational Psychology.  I recently graduated with my second master’s degree in Language, Literacy, and Culture from Adams State College.  In our family, we have Ben 18, Lonni 16 and Kate 11.  We live in Wetmore.  Each year, my husband Kurt and I put together the yearbook and run a chess club.  He is a huge part of my classroom and my best volunteer.

The best learning experience is built on a cooperative effort among parents, children and the teacher.  My expectations for conduct and academics are high.  With sixth grade, comes an increase in responsibility, leadership, and expectations.  There will be a heavy emphasis of holding students accountable for their work habits, work completion, ability to meet deadlines, and modeling good leadership for the younger students.  It is my hope to instill a sense of confidence, self-esteem, and responsibility so that each student will strive for his/her highest potential as a life long learner.  During sixth grade, your child will be expected to work on higher level thinking skills.  They will be expected to apply “the basics” they’ve learned in kindergarten through fifth grade and take on a greater responsibility for their learning.

One of my greatest accomplishments as a teacher is how I implement service learning into the curriculum.  To instill important values such as empathy, tolerance, compassion, ambition, courtesy, caring and cooperation in students has been extremely rewarding.  Children in my classes have learned to share ideas, respect each other’s rights, and care for one another.   We have delivered Meals on Wheels in the past and now we are visiting Skyline Ridge Nursing Home every Thursday.

I consider it a privilege to be your child’s teacher this year.  Please contact me at any time if you have questions or concerns.  I know we will have a wonderful year.  My work number is 276-6073.

Warmly,

Monja Nordyke
