Performance Attendance - 200 points

All band students are required to perform at scheduled concerts and parades.

The success of our group performances depends on the participation of EVERY individual.  Performances are public demonstrations of what has been learned in class

and are considered final exams for each quarter.

An unexcused absence from a performance will result in a loss of ALL 200 points.

An excused absence from a performance will be considered only

if written notice from your parent/guardian is received

at least one week prior to the date of the performance/parade.

This does not automatically excuse your absence, only that it will be considered.

All cases will be considered on an individual basis.

Deductions from points give for performances can be the result of:

Being tardy - 25 points

Chewing Gum - 50 points

Inappropriate concert dress - 50 points

Inappropriate behavior, etc. - 25 to 200 points

Playing Exams - 50 to 100 points

Playing exams are given to measure you musicianship skill progress.

Playing exams will be given 2 to 4 times per quarter.

You will need to have a blank cassette tape.  This is for you to record playing exams.

You can record the assigned material at home

or during class in the band office by the required due date.

I will listen to your taped playing exam at a later time and grade your performance.

The grading scale on this site will be used for playing exams.

Students who do not meet  playing exam deadlines

will be required to play for myself or Mr. Ovrebo during class.

Point deduction will be 20 points from playing exam grade.

Written Assignments - 50 to 100 points

Written assignments will be given to measure music literacy progress.

Written assignments will be given 2 to 4 times per quarter.

The grading scale on this site will be used for written assignments.

Students who do not turn written assignments in by given due dates will complete the assignment

during class time instead of playing their instruments.

Point deduction will be 20 points from written assignment grade.

Practice Record - 10 points each week

Students will be expected to practice to develop new musicianship skills

presented in class and reinforced in concert music.

Each student will be given a monthly practice chart to record time practiced at home.

Students are to fill out the amount of time practiced each week.

Parent/guardian is to verify the time practiced by signing the chart at the end of each week.

Practice cards are due each week on Mondays.

The recommended practice time is 15 minutes a day, 4 days a week

for a total of 60 minutes per week.

Of course it is much more productive to spread out the time over 4 days

rather than do all the practicing in one marathon session.

Students who turn in their practice charts every week with the minimum weekly practice time

will receive an off campus pass at the end of the quarter!

Percussion Sectional Rehearsals - 100 points

(During 2nd and 4th quarters)

Percussion players are required to attend ONE extra rehearsal

before the Christmas Parade in December and

ONE extra rehearsal before the Blossom Festival Parade in May.

The purpose of these two rehearsals is for the 7th and 8th graders

to learn the marching band drum line cadences for the two parades.

Rehearsals will be scheduled in the evening from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

to avoid conflicts with sports and extra curricular activities.

At least two weeks notice will be given before each scheduled rehearsal

so that you will have time to plan ahead.

Chair Placement & Challenges

Your first graded playing exam will also determine your chair placement for the start of 1st quarter.  Chair placement is necessary in order to assign concert music parts

appropriately for balance, blend and difficulty.

Once you are assigned a specific "chair" you will have the opportunity

to move up every quarter during the school year.

We will do this through a process known as challenging.

If you would like to challenge the person next to you,

first you must notify Mrs. Nolan and the "challengee" at least one week in advance.

Also, both students involved must complete a challenge contract

that will state the day and time of the challenge.

Mrs. Nolan will select the music/scales/ sight reading to be played.

Challenges will only take place before and after school, NOT during class time.

Each student will be limited to two challenges per quarter.
