My
name is Kathy Murphy and I am one of five special education teachers at
Canon City High School. I
have a BA in Elementary Education K-8 and a Masters in Special
Education, K-12. My
experience includes eight years teaching at Lincoln Elementary in Salida
Colorado as a special education teacher.
My caseload included kindergarten through sixth grade students
with mild, moderate, and severe learning disabilities.
I also taught two years of regular education at the fourth grade
level. My family and I then moved to Caņon City.
I taught one year as a Special Educator at Florence Middle School
working with seventh and eighth grade students with a variety of special
needs. The following year,
I began working as a Special Educator at Caņon City High School.
This is my tenth year working with ninth through twelfth graders
with special needs.
Prior
to this year, we would pull special needs students from the regular
education setting to deliver instruction at the student's cognitive
level. We are now learning
that it is best for students to receive regular education using
modification and accommodations to support the student in the regular
educational setting. This
"inclusion model" puts a para-professional, special educator
or a student mentor in the classroom to help the student be successful.
It also requires close collaboration between the regular educator
and the special educator. We
are excited to be moving in this positive direction.
Due
to current demands on parents and educators the web has become a vital
way of communicating. Information
regarding the special needs of students, classroom instruction, and
day-to-day progress is readily accessible.
We as educators know that communication between parent and
educator is a key element in a positive working relationship between
home and school. A healthy relationship between all parties creates an
environment where success is possible.
