Dear
Parents,
My
name is Scott Miller and I am a math instructor here and Cañon City
High School. I have been teaching since 1991 and have taught here
at CCHS since August 2000. Prior to that I taught in Georgia.
I
completed my undergraduate degree in mathematics with an emphasis in
secondary education at Georgia State University. I received a
masters degree in secondary math education from Piedmont University,
which, interestingly is the oldest university in Georgia. I also
have completed 20 hours of graduate hours in “gifted education”, a
requirement in the Gwinnett county school system where I used to teach
in Georgia.
Here
at CCHS I have taught Introduction to Algebra, Algebra 1A and Algebra
1B, Geometry, Algebra II, and Trigonometry. In all of my classes,
I encourage the students to work hard and to work consistently.
Working consistently is one on the main factors of every successful math
student. In other words, the students pick up their pencils at the
beginning of the semester, and don’t put them down until the end of
the semester. In class I enjoy helping the students understand the
material being discussed. I especially like the days when I can
act as a facilitator rather than a teacher. On these days I help
to guide the students in their learning, however, they are taking charge
of their own learning. During these times the students seem to
learn and, more importantly, retain the most information.
I
strongly encourage you as a parent to continually monitor your
student’s success in each class that they take here at the high
school. To try and help you monitor your student’s success in my
math class I will send home a progress report approximately every two
weeks. The specific dates will be listed on the syllabus handed
out at the beginning of the semester. Please be looking for a
progress report to be coming home on the listed dates, as I don’t
require the students to bring their progress reports back to me after
being signed by a parent. Since I publish the specific dates ahead
of time on the syllabus, I feel it is a parent’s responsibility to be
looking for the progress report on the assigned day.
I look forward to meeting you. Please feel free to stop by my
classroom, room 206, any time you have a question or a concern.
You can also reach me by phone at
276-5915.
Thank
you,
Scott
