Behavior Management

Instruction does not prevent wasted time or mistakes; and mistakes themselves are often the best teachers of all.

Classroom Culture:

Students will be taught procedures for our classroom community and school in the first days of school.  We will closely follow the Community Behavior Standards as we create our classroom "rules" and procedures together. The word "Rules," is a term we will use, as a standard for behaviors that will be required for us to work together daily as a team.  I believe in giving students choices and some control in their learning environment. I also believe, and you as parents will agree, the ultimate outcome for your child, as they grow academically will be that they also grow by accepting new responsibility, becoming independent, and becoming self-directed learners.   I have high expectations for individual and classroom behaviors, students will be held responsible for their own choices.  Behaviors that are inappropriate or dangerous (to themselves or others) will be referred.  I work closely with students to teach healthy choices, ways to communicate, and to not blame others for their actions.

Discussion about choices commonly are on the topic of completing homework assignments, communicating with classmates and parents, or for problem-solving.  Since communication is KEY to all success; we begin each day in a circle discussion which gives participants an opportunity to hear and understand how each student is feeling at the beginning of the day.  We also use this time to role-play and  many times to find solutions for problems in the classroom or playground.  I have found this to be a highly effective tool and I have had positive results by incorporating it into our daily schedule.

Fostering close working relationships with all members of our the community is important.  Students, families, teachers, and other school staff are important for creating an enriching learning environment.  It is my goal to cultivate learning environment, which  is safe physically and emotionally and where all students are a part of powerful learning community.  As a facilitator in this community, I realize that all children have a natural developmental process in learning that is to be honored.  My focus is that each individual learner will be treated with respect and dignity, learn to solve problems, set goals, and be responsible for personal choices.
