Dear Parents,
I would like to introduce myself and provide some information about
the art program at Canon City High School.
Although this is only my second year at CCHS, I am entering my 29th
year of teaching. This is my
nineteenth year in the Canon City School District.
I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education from the University
of Colorado in Boulder. I
have a Master’s Degree in Special Education from the University of
Northern Colorado in Greeley. I
have taught students from kindergarten age through community college
level. I taught at Skyline Elementary School for seventeen years.
I was born and raised in Leadville, Colorado and taught art at Lake
County High School from 1980 to 1986. I am now teaching the children of
former students! I am married to Monica and we have three children;
Aaron, Chelsea, and Logan.
The art curriculum has been reworked at CCHS to provide more variety for
students who are interested in taking art classes.
Introductory classes provide a wide overview of basic terms,
concepts and techniques. Advanced
classes allow art students to have discussions about the meaning of art
and to pursue their own artistic ideas independently.
We have also incorporated Advanced Placement Art History into the
curriculum. All these classes
are designed to provide students with the opportunity for creative
expression, art appreciation and to prepare them for a career in the field
of visual arts and/or art education if they are interested in exploring
those career paths.
A number of exciting opportunities exist for art students at CCHS.
Art Club meets weekly and is designed to provide time for
interested students to work on individual projects.
Art Club may also be involved in creating a mural for the new
addition to Canon City High School. The Fine Art of Christmas provides an opportunity for art
students to show their work. Additionally, the Fremont County Middle and
High School Art Show is held each spring at the Fremont Center for the
Arts and showcases the artwork of students from Fremont County.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have. My phone number at school is 276-5945.
Sincerely,
Ken McGowan
