What about Fifth Grade?

Welcome!  I am Shiloh May, your child’s teacher this year.  This is my fifth year teaching, but I consider myself to have been in the classroom since I was in grade school!  My mom used to teach, and I spent several of my summer weeks helping her prepare her classroom.

I have lived in Canon City all of my life.  In fact, I am a third generation child in Canon City (on both sides of my family).  However, I attended Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado for four years.  In 2003, I lived in Summit County, Colorado where I taught outdoor science education to children ages 8-17. And, in the summer of 2004, I lived in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.

One of the things I would love to instill in all children is how a love of reading can take you anywhere you want to go.  There have been several occasions where I have read about “faraway” places and dreamed to go there.  Fortunately, I have been able to go to several of my dream places:  Mount Rushmore, the Statue of Liberty, a Presidential inauguration, Washington D.C., Cape Cod, and many other wonderful places.  It is my goal to visit every state before I am married and to backpack through Europe before I have kids.

I received a BA degree from Adams State College, in 2001.  Currently, I am working on an 18-month master’s degree in curriculum and assessment through Adams State College.

Not only do I share a passion for teaching, I also enjoyed working as a journalist.  In the summers of 2000 and 2001, I worked for the Canon City Daily Record.  Again, reading can take you anywhere you want to go!!!  Through my work for the Daily Record, I got to go rafting for free, report on several high-crime trials, and witness a laparoscopic surgery first-hand.

My true philosophy is that the biggest lesson we can all learn in life is that, "reading can take us anywhere!"
