What about homework?

What should you expect to see every week?

   *  Every Monday, students will be given a Monday Take-Home Folder.  These folders contain all the work we have completed throughout each week.  Most work in the Monday Folder is graded.  Notes to parents can also be found in the folder as well as progress reports and book order forms.

   * Every week, your child should bring home a Current Event Summary form. An article from any relevant news source needs to be selected.  Students then fill out the form, completing such things as: who, what, when, where, and why.  Students find where the event occurred and color in that state on the map.  A world map will be included at a later date.  Then, students need to write at least a five-sentence paragraph summary about the article.

   * Every other Tuesday, you should see a progress report from your child.  This lets you know what behaviors I am seeing in class, and what grades they need to work on!

What should you expect to see every day?

   *  Every day. students are required to read for at least half an hour and write in their reader's/writer's log. You might ask:  why only for 30 minutes?  Well, students are encouraged to read for more than 30 minutes, but they also have to write in the logs.  Given quality time to write in their logs, there is less of a time constraint on reading.  Students should also read the newspaper periodically.  What is the reader's/writer's log?  It is a place where students write about what they have read and then write about events in their lives.  It can be used a journal, a place to question, a place to predict.

   * Every day, your child needs to study his/her spelling words.

   * Students will bring home Study Links nearly every night.  A family letter can be found in the Monday Take-Home Folder when we begin a new unit.  These family letters are great for helping you know math vocabulary we use.

   * Every day, you need to check their planners for how their day went, and to see what homework they have.  My home phone number is written on the inside cover of their planners!

What should you see every month?

   * Nearly every month, you should see that your child is working on a book report.  The book reports focus on different skills.  Help from parents and siblings is accepted and encouraged.

   * Book orders!!!  Look in the Monday Take-Home Folder for more information!  Always make checks payable to Scholastic!
