AWARDS ~ REWARDS
Students can earn play money in order to earn awards and/or
rewards in the literacy room.
They are paid money for
coming to class on time, by reading to an adult each evening and bring
back a signed slip that they have read, retiring a book (either
taking an Accelerated Reader test and passing it or being able to retell
the story), and they can also earn money by knowing their sight
words.
The concept of paying them
money helps them with their math skills. Each week they
"cash-in" their smaller coins for larger one's or dollar
bills. When they are ready to purchase an item, they must count
out the appropriate amount. This helps them with math concepts
such as money, counting by 5s, 10s, etc.
- Ice
cream social--During first semester students could earn various
components of an ice cream sundae. They had to earn the bowl,
the spoon, the napkin, different flavors of ice cream, syrup and
various toppings. Each item cost a different amount of money.
They can earn an ice cream sundae for themselves and a friend.
- During first quarter we held a Family Math Night, where parents
and students could participate in the various components of the new
Everyday Math the District adopted this fall. Each class
demonstrated a different concept and students and parents alike
could participate.
- Movies--During
second semester the students are working to earn a movie.
They have to purchase a movie ticket, popcorn and a soda for
themselves and a friend. Each item costs a different amount of
money.
Once a
month students can receive a free book from the Literacy Room for their
birthday. Students are given a slip at the beginning of each month
and they can come to the Literacy Room either before or after school and
pick out the book they want.
Students can increase their Accelerated Reader points
by reading and testing as a part of their nightly reading at home with
an adult. Books can be checked out from the Literacy Room (see
Literacy Resources above for more details and procedures).
