Tactile Experience Books

When meeting the reading and writing standards for students with severe needs, it becomes necessary to look at the key components of this standard:

  • attend to stimuli connected to reading materials

  • attach meaning to symbols

  • demonstrate necessary reading behaviors

  • demonstrate understanding of proper positioning of literacy materials

  • demonstrate directionality of print

Tactile Experience Books can be used to meet these key components.  These books contain actual artifacts from an experience or from an everyday life event.  Artifacts are incorporated onto the pages of a sturdy book with simple, repetitive text accompanying the object.  Objects are attached to the pages with Velcro, so that the object can be removed and matched to the page with the correct text.  Artifacts can easily be found at home, school, dollar stores, or discount stores.
