Colorado State Standards for Reading and Math

Your child's goals and objectives are based on the Colorado State Standards for reading and writing.  Primarily goals are derived from the first three standards for reading and writing:

  • Students read and understand a variety of materials.

  • Students write and speak for a variety of purposes and audiences.

  • Students write and speak using conventional grammar, usage, sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization and spelling.

Goals and objectives for math focus primarily on standard 1:

  • Students develop number sense and use numbers and number relationships in problem solving situations and communicate the reasoning used in solving these problems.

Depending on your child's needs the Colorado General Workplace Competencies may be used on which to base your child's goals and objectives.  These competencies represent the skills that most workers need in most jobs regardless of the specific occupational area.  They include communication skills, organizational skills, worker qualities, technology skills, and thinking skills.

Some students may not be able to accomplish the typical standards and benchmarks as described on the above websites.  In this case student needs are addressed within the standards by focusing on the essential concepts, or key components of the standard. An example for the Reading and Writing Content Standard #1, the key components may include gaining meaning from visual symbols, attending to stimuli connected to reading materials, or attaching meaning to symbols.  Standards are addressed, but in a way that is more appropriate to the student.
