Hello, my
name is Mike Gunkel and I am the Women’s Golf coach. I would like
to take a moment of your time (if you choose to read this) to give you
some of my background information.
I was born
in Boulder Colorado in 1949… never mind, that’s too much background
information, I will fast forward to my involvement with Canon City High
School. I attended Canon City High School in the fall of 1965, and
graduated with the Gold Medal Class of 1968. While attending our
school I participated in Football, Basketball and Track. Upon
graduation I attended Mesa Jr. College on a Football scholarship and also
participated in Track and Field. I earned an Associates of Arts
Degree in the spring of 1970.
In
September of 1970 I married the love of my life and current wife Janet
Lynne (Goff). We both attended Western State College in Gunnison
Colorado, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in the spring of 1972. Janet
continued her studies at the University of Southern Colorado, and we had
our first child Stacie. Janet earned a Masters Degree from Adams
State College and is currently a first grade teacher at Skyline Elementary
School. School District Fremont Re-1 hired me in the fall of 1972; my
duties included teaching American History, Teens and the Law, and coaching
Football, Basketball, and Track and Field.
Last May I
retired after 32 wonderful years teaching at Canon City High School.
