Welcome to First Grade!  You and your child are about to begin a wonderful year of learning.  You will see your child develop skills in reading, writing, math, science, social studies, music and art.  The best part is that you will be a partner in these learning experiences.

Your child will bring home a classroom book to read to you every day.  You will be able to see growth in reading ability as the books become longer and the vocabulary more advanced.  We will also be doing a lot of writing this year.  This begins with pictures, but quickly grows into writing sentences and short paragraphs.

Your child will also be able to check out a school library book every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.  These books are more advanced and will give you the opportunity to read to your child.  This is a wonderful experience for both parent and child.  It also shows your child that you value reading.

I will be sending you a weekly newsletter to keep you up to date on our classroom events.  I will also be sharing various aspects of the first grade curriculum with you.  Today your child will bring home a Home-School Folder.  Please check this every day. It contains a Homework Log that will show you what that evening’s homework is. After your child has finished the assignment(s), please sign the log and remind your child to put the folder in his or her book bag to return to school the next day.  There is also a place for comments on the Homework Log.  This is one of the ways we can communicate with one another.  Of course, you are always welcome to drop by school (please check in at our main office) or phone (276-5830 school, 275-6173 home).   My e-mail address is: geesamj@canon.k12.co.us

Thank you for the opportunity to become partners in your child’s education.  I am looking forward to a great year!

Sincerely,

 Jackie Geesaman
