Dear Parents,

This letter will serve both as an introduction and as a way to give you an idea about what your son or daughter will be studying this year in American History.

This is my third year teaching social studies.  I am a proud alum of this school and Canon City High School.  After graduating from Colorado State University at Pueblo, I was lucky enough to get a position here.  Besides teaching American History, Geography, and Reading, I enjoy coaching 8th grade football, intramural boys and girls basketball, and track.

Your eighth grader's time in my class will be spent studying a very interesting and important segment of our country’s past.  We will concentrate on the timeline between the original settlement of North America and America’s reconstruction after the Civil War.  When your child reaches the eleventh grade, he or she will pick up American History from Reconstruction through present day.  During the course of this class, we will look at the economic, social, military, and political history that eventually made America the world power that it is today.

In seventh grade, we will be studying world geography. After building geographic skills (map reading, types of cultures, economic models, different forms of government, etc.) we will cover every region on Earth.  Your child will leave this class with a much better concept of the people and places that make up our planet.

What can you do to help your child succeed in class?  Ask as many questions as you dare about what happened in history or geography class today.  I assure you that we will not take a single day off, so a response of “Nothing,” will not be accurate.  You can also ask about what your child thinks about current news events, as we spend the first five minutes of class sharing and discussing local, state, and national news.

If you have any questions about your student’s progress or participation in one of my classes, please call or e-mail me.  My phone number is 276-5765.

Thank you,
