Dear Parents,

I look forward to working with you and your child this year.  Getting to know a new teacher is a very difficult thing to do for you and your child.  I hope the following information helps both of you break the ice to make this year an easier transition.

Classroom Expectations:

1.  I have an open door policy.  This means that any parent may come and observe my classroom's daily events anytime.  You do not have to inform me that you are coming.  Just check in at the office anytime you enter the building.  Please feel free to visit whenever you have time.

2.  I usually have snack time at 10:00 a.m.  This seems to be when the kids need a burst of energy.  Please don’t send candy, chips, cookies, or junk food that would be inappropriate for kids to eat at school.  If you need clarification with this please ask the first week of school.

3.  For the extended family with parents who live apart or two sets of parents, I can accommodate both of you in any manner that you are comfortable with.

4.  I am very comfortable with e-mail.  I find myself communicating with parents locally and far away concerning their child.  My classroom phone number is 276-6122.  My e-mail is (wfreda@canon.k12.co.us).

5.  My students will have a planner that they document their daily homework and notes.  All completed work needs to be signed off by a parent or grandparent.  Any concerns parents have can be documented in this as well.

6.  A weekly progress report will go home every Friday.  This needs to be signed and returned the following Monday.  This will provide parents with grades, missing assignments, and your child’s quarter progress.

7.  Each student will be responsible for reading 30 minutes a night.  It must be documented and signed by an adult.  These forms will be collected each month.  This is a large portion of their quarter grade.  If one is not turned in, it will affect their grade substantially.

8.  Students will constantly be evaluated in reading and writing.  In reading, a student will be moved up, down, or stay in the same reading group based on their reading ability.  Each student will be expected to read approximately 75-100 pages a week.  Each student will have book summaries and book reports to complete.  Students will also be expected to write 5 five paragraph papers over the course of the school year.

9.  Any student who falls behind in school work will stay in at recess to get caught up.

10.  Some major academic studies will be the Holocaust, Human Body, Colorado History, Weather, and Earth Studies.

Caring Majority / Discovery Program:

The main focus of the programs is to create a school climate that feels safe and secure for all of the students in the school.  The objective is to give students practical tools not only to avoid victimization but to stop others.  The lessons are made to foster thoughtful dialogue among students about difficult social decisions.
