Below is a list of Essential Rules that I feel all students should model in and out of school.  Please take a moment to review these and go over them with your child.
When someone is speaking, your child should keep his or her eyes on the person at all times.
During discussions, your child should respect other student’s comments.
When asked a question in conversation, your child should ask a question in return.
Teach your child that, when coughing, sneezing, or burping, it is appropriate to turn his head away from others and cover his or her mouth with the palm of their hand.
Students should never roll their eyes, or show disrespect with gestures.
It is appropriate that your child always say “thank you” when given something.
Encourage your child to surprise others by performing random acts of kindness.
When your child’s class reads together, your child must follow along.
Your child should answer all written questions with a complete sentence.
Your child should understand that homework is to be turned in each day without exception.
In school, when your child’s class changes from one subject to another, the transition should be swift, quiet, and orderly.
Your child must make every effort to be as organized as possible.
Your child should follow the same rules with a substitute teacher as he/she does with the regular teacher.
Students should quickly learn the names of other teachers in the school and greet them by saying things like “Good morning, Mrs. Wrona” or Good afternoon, Mrs. Stringari”.
Your child should know to always flush a toilet and wash his or her hands after using the restroom.
Your child should not save seats in the lunchroom.
If your child approaches a door and someone is close behind, he/she should hold the door open for that person.
If someone bumps into your child, he/she should say “Excuse me” even if it was not their fault.
Your child should learn to answer the phone at home in an appropriate manner.
Your child should know never to cut in line.
If any child in school is bothering your child, he/she should let the teacher know.  The teacher is there to look after and protect your child.
Your child should accept that he/she is going to make mistakes.  Help him/her learn from them and move on.
No matter what the circumstances, children and adults should always be honest.
Teach your child to be the best he/she can be.
Teach your child to live for the moment; he/she lives today only once.  He/she mustn’t waste it!
