Cross Country

Cross country is one of the most dynamic sports at Canon City High School. The boys’ and girls’ cross country teams have experienced a great deal of success throughout the last several years. The cross country program prides itself in being a close group. Positive friendships and relationships are prevalent in this program.

Cross country is a unique sport in that it is an individual sport as well as a team sport. Athletes have an opportunity to accomplish individual goals, as well as assist their team with team goals. Both teams are coached by the same coaching staff. As a result, this provides unity with all members.

The cross country team has a nice mix of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Every athlete is given an opportunity to compete at every meet. The varsity teams consist of seven members. Junior varsity runners are given an opportunity each week to compete at the varsity level.

The cross country team is a very diverse group. Individual members possess various interests and talents besides running. In addition, there are various running abilities represented. Cross country is a program for the serious and novice runner. Each athlete is coached according to his/her ability.

Former cross country members have testified that cross country was one of their best high school experiences. In addition, they felt as though cross country gave them a great sense of belonging, and aided in their personal growth and development. Finally, they felt as though cross country helped prepare them for the many challenges they will face as a young adult.
