Literature II Course Outline
(Pre-requisite:
Pass Literature I as a ninth grader.
Ninth graders who earned a “B” or better in eight grade English
and demonstrate above-average proficiency through CSAP scores and teacher
recommendation may elect this class) Involves students in critical
analysis and application. Students
will read fiction and non-fiction for insight into the human experience
and cultural awareness. Classic
and contemporary literature including Arthurian legends, a Shakespearean
play, and a novel will provide students divers opportunities for study and
evaluation. Reaching
proficient in this course will provide students with the skills and
strategies for more complex investigation and evaluation used in American
Studies. Students are
required to provide a three-ring binder with dividers (according to
instructor’s discretion.)

Adjust reading strategies for different purposes such as reading carefully
idea by idea, skimming and scanning, fitting materials into an
organizational pattern such as reading a novel chronologically, finding
information to support particular ideas, and finding the sequence of steps
in a technical publication

Read classic and contemporary literature representing various cultural and
ethnic traditions from throughout the world.
Upon
completion of this course, the student will be able to do the following:
- Understand
literature as an expression of the human experience
- Distinguish
between fiction and non-fiction
- Read
and analyze a Shakespearian play
- Read
and evaluate a novel
- Write
a three page paper analyzing a work of literature
- Write
three to five paragraph essays analyzing works of literature
- Know
and be able to apply the literary terms to writing and to discussion
Extensions
for learners:
- Students
who need additional help may come in for extra instruction in reading
strategies, may have additional reading time if they are below grade
level in reading, may be given an easier text.
- Students
who need enrichment may elect to read more challenging material and
may participate in our novel discussion groups.
