Speaking
and Listening 103
At
Canon City H.S. through the Senior-to-Sophomore program, speech is
available for three semester hours of college credit from CSU
Pueblo. This is a great way to obtain a college class that almost
all majors require. You can do so in a friendly, supportive
environment. The college even provides the book!
In
addition to the requirements of CCHS speech these are the four assignments
that you would be completing.
#1.
Exam- based on the book- 50 points- 50 multiple choice questions.
- I
have provided you with a study guide of highlights. It is very
important that you know this material. The test questions are tricky.
- You
will take this exam the last week of class..
#2.
Organization or product speech- 40 points
- I
have provided you with a grading rubric.
- This
speech is 4 to 5 minutes in length.
- You
must cite two sources of information.
- Follow
the plan piece.
- Make
sure you are using amplification.
- You
may present whenever you are ready. Just tell me. However, my
suggestion is that you give this speech the second week of class.
#3
Concept speech- 60 points
- I
have provided you with a grading rubric.
- This
speech is 5 to 6 minutes in length.
- Select
an abstract idea. For example, you might select love, understanding,
envy, justice.
- The
purpose of this speech to create a complete understanding of what the
concept is for the audience. Therefore, amplification is the key.
- These
areas must be included: a definition of the concept, what a
philosopher says about the concept, what the concept is similar to,
what the concept is not (example: love is not lust), and define the
concept by stating what causes it.
- I
have a video of Julie Silengo’s concept speech that you are more
than welcome to view in class.
- You
may present whenever you are ready and whenever you have completed the
organization/product speech. However, my suggestion is that you give
this speech the fourth week of class.
#4 Issue Speech- 80 points
- I have provided you with a grading rubric.
- This
speech is 6 to 7 minutes in length.
- Select
a topic or a matter that is under dispute. (Video games create violent
teens. Affirmative action should be eliminated.)
- This
is NOT a persuasive speech. You don’t have to change anyone’s
mind. This is a discussion of the controversy. Here’s the
controversy.
- The
most critical element is amplification. Give ample examples of the
controversy. Analyze that information.
- Yes,
you must cite a minimum of three research sources.
- My
suggestion is that you give this speech by the end of our first week
back in January.
*You must have these four elements completed by
the last day of the semester.
I do not want you stressing, so please don’t
wait until the last week of the semester.
**Your success matters to me. I want you to earn an A
for this college credit class. I am available to help you before school,
at lunch, or after school. Please make an appointment to obtain help if
you need it!
***Remember, your college credit grade is computed as
follows:
·
50% is your grade for the general speech class
·
50% is your average of the four assignments listed above.
·
Note that your grades for the college credit portion do not
compute at all in your grade for the general
speech class.
*You
must have these four elements completed by the last day of class. There
are no extensions available since I must submit grades to CSU Pueblo by
their deadline!
