Dear
Parent (s):
Welcome
to American Studies. This class combines American History and American Literature
for juniors at Canon City High School.
American Studies offers students the opportunity to explore their
country’s history, culture, and the arts beyond the facts and dates.
Students research how this country’s priorities and actions
have a direct effect on its literature, and how the literature
instigates change in the culture and politics.
While the study of history and literature fulfills the course’s
curricular objectives, it is the realization and investigation of the
human condition that challenge students to become informed and involved
citizens of the United States. We
want our students to effect positive change in the 21st
century based on their understanding of their past and its trials and
triumphs. Since we are
condemned to repeat the past from which we do not learn, it is our hope
that our students will continue to question and clarify what is
happening around them long after they leave American Studies.
Students will receive a credit in Social Studies and a credit in
English after successfully completing four quarters of the class.
Your
son or daughter has two teachers for this class, Chris Coppa and Cindi
Perrin. Students will focus
on the history portion of American Studies with Mr. Coppa and the
literature with Miss Perrin.
Chris Coppa earned his Bachelor’s degree at the University of
Northern Colorado and his masters degree from the University of
Colorado, Colorado Springs. A graduate of Canon City High School, Chris
has been teaching for 15 years at CCHS and 3 years at Canon City Junior
High. Cindi Perrin
also earned her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Northern
Colorado and received her masters degree from Lesley College. She has
been teaching at CCHS for 16 years and 2 years at Canon City Junior
High.
Our
students receive a quarterly course syllabus that provides them with the
rationale, expectations, and evaluation for each quarter’s assignment.
It is our hope that your student will share the syllabus with
you. Students have examples of what is plagiarized work, and how
to correctly document and avoid plagiarism.
While plagiarized work has never been eligible for credit, we
hope that involving parents from the beginning
will keep everyone informed of the expectations of American
Studies. Again, we hope
that your student has had time to share this with you.
This website has a current copy of the syllabus’ calendar,
students have calendars in the syllabus, and you should have received a
copy, also. Each year
students and parents have shared with us that having a copy of the
syllabus calendar at home is a useful tool for parents and students.
Displaying this on the refrigerator seems to be the most popular
place. This is a very
effective visual reminder for your student, and it never hurts to have
someone at home asking about deadlines.
Thank you for providing this assistance.
Grades
are posted weekly and student reports are provided on request.
Our office hours are M-F from 1:20- 3:00 p. m.
Please feel free to call us at 276-5906
Sincerely,
Chris
Coppa and
Cindi Perrin
