Physical Fitness

Instructor:  Mrs. Boring

Course Description:

                    Physical Fitness is an elective  course.  This course will deal with weight training and conditioning. Basic fundamental skills involved in various lifts are the foundation of this class.  By completion of this course, students will be aware of and have met each of our Physical Education Standards:

1.       Students will understand the need to demonstrate appropriate personal and social behavior in physical activity settings.

2.       Students will demonstrate the knowledge and physical skills necessary to participate in a variety of activities.

3.       Students will understand the importance of participating regularly in physical fitness and its relation to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

4.       Students will demonstrate the ability to self-monitor components of physical fitness and activities.

Grading Scale:

                    A = 100-90

                    B =  89 - 80

                    C =  79 =70

                    D = 69 -60

                    F:  BELOW 60% of total points

Assessment:

1.        Dress appropriately EVERYDAY

v      T-shirt or sweatshirt (NO profanity, NO alcohol, tobacco, or drug advertisements)

v      Shorts, sweatpants, or warm-ups (NO boxers, baggy shorts or jean shorts)

v      Shoes (clean and non-marking tennis shoes)

2.        The SIX P’s:  Prompt, Prepared, Polite, P.M.A., Productive, Participate

3.        Assignments, activities, projects, and tests

4.        Attendance

Non-Dress Policy:

                If you choose NOT to dress out appropriately for class, the following consequences will occur:

                                1st Offense:  Teacher-Student conference, non-dress form sent home, -1 letter grade

                                2nd Offense:  Same as 1st offense with a FINAL warning & a call home to parent/guardian, -2 letter grades

                                3rd Offense:  Student loses credit and will remain in class in study hall/audit situation, FAILS class

A student who chooses to NOT dress out CAN NOT participate because he/she is not prepared.

**IF YOU FORGET YOUR CLOTHES AND CAN’T BORROW FROM A FRIEND, THERE ARE CLOTHES AVAILABLE FOR CHECK-OUT FROM YOUR TEACHER**

The Six P’s:

Prompt:  Be in the locker room by the end of passing period.  Be ready to go into the gym/classroom/outside/etc., with your notebook and materials, 4 minutes after the tardy bell.  I will call you out of the locker room—be listening!! J

Prepared:  Have all of your required clothes and materials with you or in your locker before class starts.  You must be responsible.

Polite:  Take care of school property and equipment.  Foul language will not be tolerated in the classroom, locker rooms, or within class at all.  Students must exhibit good citizenship in the classrooms, gyms, weight room, locker rooms, or any other area used in Physical Education class.  Unacceptable behavior that interferes with other students’ right to learn will not be tolerated.

Positive Mental Attitude (P.M.A.):  Students will come to class ready to learn and participate in physical activity.  Negative attitudes are not necessary and will not be tolerated.  We will have fun learning and will cooperate in physical activity daily.

                Productive:  Students will remain on task during all classroom/activity sessions.

                Participate:  Students must participate everyday unless excused by a PHYSICIAN’S note.

Daily Rubric:

The following rubric/point system will be used on a DAILY basis.  At the end of each class, you will be given one of the following scores according to how you met the 6 P’s.  This score is independent from test scores, assignment scores, etc.

4         The student shows respect at all times toward self, peers, teacher, and equipment.  Student is prepared for class (brings what they need) and is ready four minutes after the bell.  The student is dressed properly for class.  The student is involved in the activity the whole time, does proper movements, works out hard, cooperates with classmates, and does not complain.  All of the 6 P’s are met.

2         The student shows respect most of the time.  The student is partially prepared and/or is late for class.  The student is involved in the activity most of the time or is giving a partial effort.  Three-Five of the 6 P’s are met.

0         The student shows little to no respect, in unprepared for class, is dressed improperly, participates very little, and/or is absent from class.  Two or less of the 6 P’s are met.

Assignments, Projects and Tests:

Homework may be assigned on classroom material.   Written tests may be given class material.

Attendance Policy:

School policy allows three general absences per quarter before the student will lose credit.  In this class, the following will occur for absences past three:

4-6 absences:  if not made up, the student will be dropped a letter grade in addition to loosing credit for missed work                 

                Students have the following 3 choices to make-up their absences beyond 3:

1.        Jog one mile before or after school in the presence of the teacher.

2.        Time for time. Do clean up / work for teacher before or after school that equals the time gone.

3.       Two page, typed, double-spaced paper on a topic related to class with 2 cited sources.

Beyond 6 absences:  student will fail class at teacher’s/counselor’s/administrator’s discretion

Workouts

                Students will be required to follow a set workout. Workout schedules will be handed out during class.

Students who do not follow the workouts will lose daily points.

Tardy Policy:

                Students who are tardy will lose daily points.

LOCKER ROOM PROCEDURES:

ü       Do not bring valuables or a large sum of money into the locker room

ü       Each student is responsible for his/her lock, locker, and securing his/her personal belongings

ü       Never share a locker with another student

ü       Respect others and their belongings

ü       No food or drink is allowed in the locker room or within class at all.  (Water is the exception.)

ü       Belongings must be kept in the small, gray lockers at ALL times EXCEPT while in class when they can be locked in the long, yellow lockers

ü       Stay in the locker room, behind the “line” until called out or until the bell rings.  Leaving early will result in a truancy.  A TRUANCY RESULTS IN LOSS OF ONE LETTER GRADE.

ü       Do not leave by the back door except in an emergency
