Welcome to the wonderful world of first grade! This site will give you important information about our typical day and our routines.  Feel free to call 276-6110 for more information.       More details available

Our lunch period is from 12:00 to 12:45. Students may bring lunches from home or lunches may be purchased by the day, week or month. Please send cash or check in an envelope with your child’s name on it. He/she may pay for lunch before school in the lobby by the office. Hot lunch costs $1.25 and extra milk is $0.25. If you are joining your child for lunch, adult lunches are $2.75.

We have snack time/fruit break in the morning. Your child may bring fruit, crackers, cheese, yogurt, vegetables, etc. I provide crackers for anyone who wants some. Please do not send cookies or candy for snack.

If your child is absent from school, please send a note explaining the absence on the day your child returns to school. The handbook, which you received at registration, outlines procedure for sending medication if it needs to be taken at school. Thank you for sending a note if your child must leave school early. Remember that you need to sign your child out at the office.

We have P.E. with Mrs. Wiebers, Music with Mrs. Nolan, and Art with Mrs. VanIwarden on alternating days. We have those "Specials" from 2:25 to 2:55 daily. In addition, we have Computer with Mrs. Nimmo on Thursday and Friday from 1:55 to 2:25.

In first grade, we are allowed to check out one library book from our library. We visit the library daily. Your child may check out another as soon as the current one is checked in. The book should be returned within a week of checkout. Each child is responsible for the return of any book checked out. As parents, you can reinforce reading skills taught to your child by helping them read everything – food boxes, signs, clocks, library books, etc. Reading to/with your child each day provides an important model for him/her. Your child will be bringing home a folder every night. It will contain any notes or notices from school, work that your child has completed, and a chart story that your child can read to you. Please remove the notes and completed work but return the chart story. We are compiling a binder of stories to be read again and again. When we are off and running, the work folder will also contain a guided reading book which your child should read to you. I will include a reading log for you to sign after you have listened to your child read. The purpose of the guided reading book is to reinforce a reading strategy that we are learning. It is important that someone at home reads with/to your First Grader and signs the reading log. Your child should bring the folder back every day. Beginning next week, the folder will also contain "word wall" words that your child is learning to spell. You and your child should practice them nightly. When your child spells them to me on Friday, we will retire the words. Watch for a new set of words each Monday.

Birthdays are very important to First Graders. You are welcome to bring or send treats for the class to help celebrate the special day. For those "summer children", we have "unbirthday" celebrations. I’d appreciate it if you could give me a few days notice if you are sending treats so that I can plan accordingly. Please do not send party invitations to school unless you are inviting everyone in the class.

During these first few hot weeks of school, the kids might want drink cups at their tables. They may bring the cups with screw on lids and straws.

I am sending book order forms for two companies. I have found that Trumpet and Scholastic are reliable and inexpensive. Please do not feel obligated to purchase books when I send these home. If you do choose to buy, please send cash or check (made out to the book company) in an envelope with your child’s name on it. Please return the form within a week.

If your child is transported home or to daycare after school, it is important that your child is picked up in St. Michael’s church parking lot or on the east side of the Washington School playground (10th street). Please do not park on College Ave. as Canon City High School dismissal time is just minutes before ours, which creates some traffic congestion on College. You are welcome to walk over and meet your child at our classroom door at 3:00 dismissal. Please do not park in the west parking lot (9th street). Thanks for your cooperation in this matter.

Thank you for the opportunity to work with your child this year. I am really excited about the adventure ahead. Please feel free to contact me at school (276-6110)* or home (275-4960) if you have questions or concerns.* If you call me at school during the school day, your call will be sent to my voicemail. I will return your call during my planning time at 2:30.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Mary Pirraglia
