Syllabus for kindergarten
- A child must be 5 years old on or before June 1st
to start kindergarten in the Fall.
- To successfully complete kindergarten, and have a smooth
transition into first grade the following must occur:
- Socially:
- Be able to make appropriate behavior choices
- Respect the rights of others
- Handle conflict in an appropriate manner
- Work independently
- Complete a task in a timely manner
- Readiness:
- Knows whole name
- Knows address
- Knows phone number
- Applies self-help skills( buttons, ties, zips)
- Can print first name
- Knows colors
- Knows shapes
- Communicates basic needs
- Follows directions
- Participates in class discussions
- Literacy:
- Recognizes all capital and small letters
- Recognizes all beginning sounds
- Can start sounding out 3 letter words
- Matches capital and small letters
- Retell a known story
- Can tell a story with a beginning, middle, and end
- Understands directionality
- Uses pictures to predict print
- Recognizes parts of a book
- Can identify and repeat rhyming words
- Follow text when read aloud
- Can focus on word after word in sequence
- Knows the difference between words and numbers
- Writing:
- Uses pictures and print to convey meaning
- Uses directionality in writing (top to bottom, left to
right)
- Can reach the writing stage of beginning sounds
- Math:
- Can recognize numbers to 20
- Can write to 20
- Can count to 100 by 1's, 5's, and 10's
- Counts object to 10 with 1 on 1 correspondence
- Matches numbers to sets
- Identifies, extends, and creates patterns
- Addition and subtraction with objects
- Can sort and classify
- Simple graphing
- estimation
